Pastor's Welcome

In the name of the parish, I welcome you to St. Dominic Parish website and thank you for taking the time to visit.

St. Dominic Parish has been in the care of the Dominican Friars of the Province of St. Joseph since its creation as a parish in 1852. As such, it shares a rich history that goes back not only to its foundation as a parish in Washington, DC, but to the foundation of our Province in 1805 in the United States, and further to the foundation of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) in 1216 by St. Dominic.

The building which houses the parish at worship was begun in 1875 and after a severe fire that destroyed the interior, was rebuilt into the present building which was consecrated in 1919. The church is also the home of one of the few remaining Roosevelt organs, instruments that were created and built by an American organ builder.

During the life of the parish, St. Dominic’s has been home to a worshipping community that includes all strata of American life, from the poorest of God’s poor to the most powerful in our nation, including the late President Lyndon Johnson as well as present day members of Congress. The parish community serves both as a traditional weekend family as well as a weekday business community family from the workers in the Federal government buildings that surround us. All are welcome here to worship our common God and to share and strengthen each other in our faith.

The history of the friars who have lived and served in St. Dominic’s Priory include military chaplains that go back to the Civil War as well as retired chaplains who have served in the Navy, Army and Air Force. Friars here also served as theologians who taught at the Dominican Seminary in NorthEast Washington as well as at Catholic University of America. St. Dominic’s Parish community along with the Dominican Friars who live and serve here are a microcosm of the American populace. We share a common faith and when we are at worship in our Church, we worship as one.

I hope that should your travels take you to our Nation’s Capital, you will join us at worship here at St. Dominic’s Church.

Fr. Gregory R. Salomone, op
